ECO WORLD FOUNDATION EXTENDS SUPPORT TO TWO JOHOR SCHOOLS

Eco World Foundation helped two schools in Johor to upgrade their facilities.   It handed over Laman Eco Green to SK Gelang Patah, and 150 sets of chairs and tables to SJKC Ming Terk on 29/07/2024. SK Gelang Patah is the third school to receive assistance under the SAP Special Projects 2024. With a population of 1,041, comprising 971 students and 70 staff, the school expressed its desire to create a more cheerful and comfortable school environment.  The school’s aspiration was realised by the Eco World Foundation with a donation of RM28,000. This amount covers the improvement of Laman Eco Green and the planting of low shrubs along the walkways and outside classrooms, which will benefit over 1,000 school members and visitors alike. 26 volunteers from Team EcoWorld in Johor participated in a cleanup at SK Gelang Patah and painted murals around the school’s surau. This effort aims to ensure a cleaner and more conducive environment. In addition, the Eco World Foundation also provided a donation to SJKC Ming Terk, by providing 150 sets of chairs and tables for use by students at the school, spending a total of RM25,000.

EWF BUILDS OPEN CLASSROOM FOR SJKC CHUNG WAH

The idea for an open classroom at SJKC Chung Wah, inspired by Team EcoWorld from Eco Grandeur, embodies our commitment to sustainability. This initiative, supported by the Eco World Foundation, signifies our joint effort towards lifelong learning and environmental stewardship. Creating an Eco Zone outside the traditional classroom is a pioneering step towards sustainable education. This space integrates natural light, ventilation, vegetation, rainwater harvesting, and recycled materials, fostering a deeper connection with nature and enhancing the learning experience. This time around, the Foundation spent RM40,000 on SJKC Chung Wah, building an open classroom.  Aptly named “Eco Zone”. We envision our students and teachers thriving in this innovative space, where learning beyond walls cultivates a profound appreciation for nature and enriches educational outcomes. At SJKC Chung Wah and EcoWorld, we are united in our mission to safeguard the environment and champion sustainability. This initiative is an investment in our children's future, ensuring a brighter tomorrow through responsible practices today.

ENHANCES SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT WITH NEW COVERED WALKWAY

Eco World Foundation built a 52m long covered walkway for SK Sungai Binjai, Meru Klang,  The project costs RM70,000.00 with addition of some waiting areas including benches, painting of 15 classrooms and upgrading works on existing facilities. Located at Jalan Meru Tambahan, SK Sungai Binjai has a student population of 3,300 with both morning and afternoon sessions. With such a high student population, the school’s current entry/exit gates were getting too congested.  There are four entry/exit gates. However, Gate C did not have a covered walkway, forcing students to walk on the grass. To address this issue, a new covered walkway was constructed, providing students with a more convenient and practical route. Additionally, several other enhancements were made, including the installation of waiting areas with benches and a raised walkway to avoid flooding. These improvements have significantly benefited the students, making it safer and more comfortable for them. 25 Team EcoWorld volunteers from Eco Grandeur came together to paint two blocks of classrooms (15 classrooms) to help enliven the learning environment for the students. This is the second time that Team EcoWorld has come together for such a CSR activity. In 2016, Team EcoWorld volunteers had painted 35 classrooms for the school.

This CSR initiative, aimed at enhancing the learning environment for students, highlights the Foundation's ongoing commitment to educational development. This is not the first time the Foundation has come to the aid of SJKC Yu Hua. In 2019, the Foundation donated 150 sets of desks and chairs worth RM16,500. This was followed by another 150 sets of desks and chairs a few months later, bringing the total contribution sum to RM33,000. This year, the Foundation donated another 50 desks to SJKC Yu Hua worth RM6,000, while another RM12,000 was spent on paint supplies and tools for the one-day CSR murals and painting project which involved 44 volunteers from Team EcoWorld.

ECO KIDS CAFÉ PROJECT AT SJKT LADANG NORTH HUMMOCK

Eco World Foundation continues its commitment to create a positive impact on the community with its latest project under the Special Projects for Schools – an initiative under its Students Aid Programme (SAP). The Foundation, together with Eco Ardence, Eco World Development Group Berhad (EcoWorld Malaysia)'s thriving integrated eco-township in Setia Alam, contributed towards the expansion of SJKT Ladang North Hummock's canteen with the Project Eco Kids Café. Before the much-needed canteen extension, SJKT Ladang North Hummock Setia Alam had a small canteen that required three recess sessions to accommodate its students. In view of the increasing student population, Eco World Foundation and Eco Ardence stepped up to offer assistance in extending the canteen. The RM40,000 Project Eco Kids Café includes a 20M x 5M extension involving roofing, flooring, wiring inclusive of lights and fans together with four sets of canteen table and benches. “Project Eco Kids Café was completed in August this year and on behalf of the Eco World Foundation, I would like to thank the Eco Ardence team for their dedication to creating a conducive and welcoming school environment for students,” said Tan Sri Lee.

Eco World Foundation Enhances School Environment at SK Seri Perling 2

Eco World Foundation is delighted to announce the successful completion and handover of a 50-meter covered walkway and waiting area at SK Seri Perling 2, a project aimed at significantly improving the daily school experience for both students and staff. Prior to the construction, students had to navigate a grassy area, enduring the whims of the weather, be it rain or scorching sun, as they made their way out of school. Now, thanks to the newly installed concrete walkway complete with a protective covering stretching from the school premises to the gate, students have a safe and sheltered passage, making their journey home not only comfortable but also hassle-free. The positive impact of this transformation is especially evident during noon dismissal and the afternoon school session interval, where the movement of students has become notably smoother, fostering a more organized and efficient school environment. This initiative, carried out during the August school term break, was made possible through the collaboration between Eco World Foundation and the dedicated team at SK Seri Perling 2, with a total cost of RM35,000. This project is a testament to the power of corporate-social partnerships, demonstrating how collective efforts can bring about tangible change in the lives of students and their communities. Moreover, SK Seri Perling 2 is also a beneficiary of the Foundation's Students Aid Program (SAP), providing basic educational assistance to 18 underprivileged students. This holistic approach underlines Eco World Foundation’s commitment to not only enhancing the physical infrastructure of schools but also supporting the educational aspirations of those in need, thereby fostering a brighter future for all.

Eco World Foundation Enhances Education Landscape: Handing Over of School Signage at SJK(C) Convent Datuk Keramat, Penang

Eco World Foundation's commitment to education and community development was on full display during the "Handing Over of School Signage" event at SJK(C) Convent Datuk Keramat, Penang, held on October 16, 2023. The Foundation not only installed a significant 12' x 8' signboard but also carried out essential landscaping work to transform the school's surroundings. This initiative, with a total cost of RM15,000, exemplified the collaborative spirit as 41 dedicated volunteers from EcoWorld worked together to beautify the school. Furthermore, SJK(C) Convent Datuk Keramat is one of the beneficiaries of the Foundation's Students Aid Program (SAP), with 12 underprivileged students receiving basic educational assistance. The event witnessed Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, Chairman of Eco World Foundation, planting a tree in the school garden, signifying the growth and development supported by this project. This transformation not only rectifies the school's lack of proper signage but also aligns with the Ministry of Education's directive of forging partnerships with corporate entities, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in educational progress and community upliftment. The "Handing Over of School Signage" at SJK(C) Convent Datuk Keramat is a testament to Eco World Foundation's holistic approach to community welfare. By providing a striking visual identity for the school and fostering a more inviting environment, this initiative ensures that the institution is unmissable for all passersby, particularly along the bustling Datuk Keramat road. It reflects the Foundation's dedication to working in harmony with the Ministry of Education's vision, fostering a spirit of cooperation between corporate bodies and educational institutions. This project not only underscores the importance of corporate social responsibility but also serves as a beacon of hope for underprivileged students who are part of the SAP, reinforcing the Foundation's mission of transforming lives and creating a brighter future through quality education and community development.

Eco World Students Aid Programme - Dialogue with Parents

We are thrilled to share the success of our recent event, the "Dialogue with Parents (DWP)," which proved to be a significant milestone in our mission to foster educational empowerment. The primary objective of this event was to bridge the gap between the parents and the invaluable support offered by Eco World Foundation under the Students Aid Program (SAP). Through insightful sessions, parents were not only informed about the substantial assistance their children receive but also guided on their roles within this transformative educational journey. What truly made these sessions impactful were the inspiring testimonies from students who have been beneficiaries of Eco World Foundation's support since their primary school years and have now successfully graduated. Their stories served as powerful motivators, showcasing the tangible impact of SAP and emphasizing the vital role parents play in the educational growth of their children.

We are heartened by the enthusiastic response, with an average turnout rate of 75% across all 12 DWP sessions. The motivation and engagement displayed by parents during these dialogues have energized us further. With this encouraging momentum, Eco World Foundation is more determined than ever to continue its mission of nurturing bright minds and transforming lives through SAP. We firmly believe that with the collective effort of parents, students, and the foundation, we can pave the way for more students to pursue higher education and achieve their dreams. Together, we aspire to produce a new generation of capable, empowered, and inspired tertiary students, laying the foundation for a brighter future for our communities and the world at large.

Overcoming odds to become Doctors ‘The inspiring journeys of three underprivileged girls’ ~ Rawiah Bt Abu Bakar

Rawiah bt Abu Bakar has graduated with a medical degree from Universiti Sains Malaysia in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan, and will soon be doing her housemanship in the Seberang Jaya hospital.   Her father used to run a small kedai makan in Kulim before becoming a fishmonger. He had to stop work in 2015 due to ill-health.  He died five years later.   Rawiah was then in her second year in medical school.   “I had always wanted to be a doctor to help people, but initially I was overwhelmed by the enormous challenges I had to overcome in my studies including learning new medical terminologies and practices that I had no previous knowledge of.   “ I had to learn many new things during my posting in different department of the hospital. But nothing is impossible.  If you have the will, you will acquire the skill”.   During her course, Rawiah has had to contend with burnout, but the stresses were alleviated by patients, staff nurses, doctors, cleaners, and the Makcik and Pakcik at the Café.   She said EcoWorld has always been her guardian angel. They have been her guide and supporter since her primary school days, so much so that she considers herself a member of the EcoWorld family.   “The EcoWorld teams have always taken an interest in my mental and health conditions to ensure that I could continue to focus on my studies.   “In every way, they have been my emotional support, advising me on all aspects of life’s challenges”.   “In fact, they even visited my father when he was ill.”   Rawiah would like to give back to society the way EcoWorld has done for her.   “It was my father’s dream for me to become a successful doctor. I will make sure his dream comes true.” Her advice to students in similar traits: “Fix a goal and then stay focused”.

Overcoming odds to become Doctors ‘The inspiring journeys of three underprivileged girls’ ~ Debbie Quah

Debbie Quah  is a fourth year medical student at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah. She hopes to graduate in 2022   Debbie is an orphan. The only child in her family, she first lost her mother through sickness when she was 16, and not long after, her father, the victim of a motor accident.   She was devastated.   “I wanted to give up on myself as I lost all motivation to move on.  All the loneliness and negative thoughts surrounded me. I felt so much of regret and remorse.  I blamed myself and kept asking myself ‘Why, Why, Why?”.   “ I missed my parents so much.  I still do.  But life goes on”.   From her Primary school days, she was already receiving financial aid and moral support from EcoWorld, and with their continued support, she completed her secondary education and then enrolled at Universiti Malaysia Sabah, having qualified for a course in medicine.   “ I am so grateful to EcoWorld. Especially to Captain Dato Liew Siong Sing, Ms Tang Dee Leng, and Mr Tan Yang Wei.   “I asked Dato what I could do to payback EcoWorld, and he replied: ’Don’t give it back to us, give it back to society’”.   Debbie said that was what motivated her to be a doctor, and when she graduates.. “I wish to make a difference in my patients’ lives.”   She was once a motivational speaker at a function that EcoWorld organised for funders of their charity efforts. And then she said:” Life is like a marathon race.  The starting point isn’t so important.   “What is important is how we run the race. And we are grateful for all the assistance we get to finish the race.”   Sure, she is sometimes lonely.  And when she is, she listens to her favourite band and role model, the seven-member South Korean boy band, BTS, which has become the biggest exponent of K-pop music in the world.   Her advice to youngsters facing  challenges in their studies and in life::”Your past and poor family will not prevent you from giving of your best to become the best.

Overcoming odds to become Doctors ‘The inspiring journeys of three underprivileged girls’ ~ R. Lavania

R. Lavania wants to become a doctor. She is currently in the third year of her medical course at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, Terengganu. She hopes to graduate in 2023. She has had to face numerous challenges in her life and scholastic journey but has never looked back. She comes from a single parent  home.  Her father left her and her two siblings when they were toddlers. As the sole breadwinner, her mother had to play the role of father, guide, supporter, while working as a clerk. “We had a moderate life with no extras but mother was our sustainer,” said Lavania. Her mother believed that experience was greater than any other lesson, and so she did not shield her children from facing the challenges, the fears and insecurities of  life “She gave me the strength to stand up to the bullying, harassments and embarrassments that I faced in school because I had no father, and because I was a girl”. What motivated her to study medicine? “ I decided to become a doctor when I was six years old. My mother encouraged me, saying ‘You can be anything you want’”. When friends asked me if I had a Plan B just in case I did not qualify to study medicine, I told them that there was no Plan B. I will become a doctor”. She received encouragement from her teachers and has been the benefactor of emotional, psychological and financial support from EcoWorld  ever since she was eight years old. “Besides providing sponsorship and other help, EcoWorld staff gave me to have heart-warming moments with their words of wisdom and encouragement. Any words of advice for students in similar dire straits? “This Covid-19 pandemic has shown us that money, status, comfort, belongings may all be passing possessions, but knowledge will stay with us always. So, go for it.”   She also hopes to work for a Non-Governmental Organisation as a way of reaching out to the needy.

GIVING BACK TO SOCIETY – Yap Yeok Kar

Yap Yeok Kar who obtained her degree in Engineer Entrepreneurship from Universiti Malaysia Perlis owes much of her success to her Hero—her mum. “I could not have managed it without my Hero who worked as a promoter in a shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur while bringing up three children single-handedly”, she said at a recent interview. She remembers her breakfast daily during her primary school days consisted of white bread and a glass of Milo. “Words cannot express how grateful I am for the help and support from Eco World Foundation through its Students Aid Programme”, she added. The programme helps students from low-income families by meeting their tuition fees, and the cost of tuition, stationery, books, shoes, bags, computer classes and transportation fees, in addition to counselling and motivational talks.   At an interview, she quoted the saying: As you sow so shall you reap.  But for her, it was a case of reaping as others sowed.   “I would therefore like to give back to society in any way I can.  I hope to help orphanages with essential items, especially at this time of the Covid-19 pandemic”.

GIVING BACK TO SOCIETY – Tan Sze Mei

Seeing her mother’s daily struggle to put food on the table and take care of all other needs on a daily basis, had a profound effect on Tan Sze Mei.  She resolved to do what was necessary to help her mother and others in similar circumstances when she was in a position to do so. “But I realized soon that we cannot change the world unless we change ourselves first. The only way to reverse our situation was through education.” And so she put all her other needs on the backburner and concentrated on her studies, finally graduating with a degree in Computer Science from University Tunku Abdul Rahman in Kampar. “At first I was worried  whether my siblings and I could even manage the expenses for our secondary school education. “in 2006, I was one of the candidates selected to be financially assisted by Eco World Foundation.  That was the luckiest thing that happened in my life. “No words can ever describe the gratitude I feel for the help, support and encouragement I received from Capt Dato’ Liew Siong Sing, (the CEO) and his staff of EcoWorld.” “They taught me great lessons and ways to navigate through life’s great challenges’. Another important lesson she learned from EcoWorld was the need to inspire others in similar circumstances.  This realization motivated her to share her experiences recently and give encouragement to children and their parents in Sabah who were similar sponsored by EcoWorld.

As a security guard Roslan bin Johari was always mindful of his duty to keep undesirable elements at bay at his workplace. But he was equally  conscious of the need to embrace and encourage good values and habits at home. Throughout her school years, Zulaika was a good student, consistently scoring As in most of her subjects. But for the family they were financially challenging She was then selected by  EcoWorld and given financial, emotional and psychological support, from primary school, all the way through her secondary school days, and tertiary education at the  Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris in Tanjung Malim. As part of its charity efforts, EcoWorld regularly also holds events to motivate its other sponsored students throughout Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.  One such event was held in Kota Kinabalu where  Zulaika was the motivational speaker, sharing her experiences as a EcoWorld-sponsored student. “I want my story to be an inspiration to other students who are on the verge of giving up because of financial, emotional and psychological challenges” she said. “Ecoworld staff have always taken a personal interest in my journey.  They are like friends.” ……………………………………..

Currently employed at one of the local largest glove manufacturing company as Production and Automation Engineer, Dinesh is the third in a family of five. He completed his Bachelor in Aerospace Engineering from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). His father was a lorry attendant and his mother also had a low paying job in a private enterprise.  They were hardpressed to meet their children’s educational and other needs. Dinesh was then studying at the primary school, SJK(T) Sungai Renggam in 2002 when he was  selected  for sponsorship. With his excellent grades in UPSR, PMR and SPM, he was accepted into UPM.  All those years, he was a sponsored student. “EcoWorld did not stop just helping me financially, but they also supported me mentally such as giving motivational talks through their academic awards scheme and their meetings with parents to better know the students home backgrounds, and their career talks”. “I never had financial problems, even at University because every semester I was supported by Ecoworld’s Students Aid Programme”. This helped him focus on his studies.  Dinesh graduated with First Class Honours. ‘I now want to give back to society. “ I would like to make a difference in students’ lives by guiding them during the time when they are thinking of a future career. “I wish all my brothers and sisters the best of luck and urge them to make use of the opportunities given to them by EcoWorld  to contribute to the community in future”.

Another recipient of aid from Eco World Foundation is Zaidatul Nur Hidayah from Pekan, Pahang who graduated recently from Universit Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) in Batu Pahat, Johor. Her mother were in the B40 group who could not, on her own, afford to send their four children for higher studies.  Here again, came EWF to offer help through its Students Aid Programme (SAP). Zaidatul who works as the assistant chief cashier at a leading retail company attributes her positive outlook and determination to her mother who advised her to accept all challenges in life with an open heart and to deal with them with wisdom and patience. “Although I am not from an affluent family, I managed to survive and graduate, thanks to EcoWorld ”, she said. He two biggest challenges in life were money management and time management, for both of which she is grateful to the staff of Eco World Foundation especially its CEO Dato Capt Liew Siong Sing and his staff. “Their holistic approach to helping people like me is admirable,” she said. “Not only do they offer financial help, they are also interested in my welfare, my motivation and in counselling me and my parents.“Even after I graduated, the Foundation still contacted me asking how I have been doing so far”.  That has motivated her to want to give back to society. She has been a volunteer in biodiversity conservation activities. Currently she is planning to join her local community services club which focuses on meeting the needs of the less fortunate. “Thank you, EcoWorld”.

GIVING BACK TO SOCIETY - Tang Zi Sheng

Deaf and mute couple, Mr Tang Kok Meng and Mdm Margaret Wong Chee Mei would settle for nothing less than the best for their children. With their determination, foresight and a little help from a charitable organisation, they saw their son complete his Engineering degree at a local university. Their daughter had graduated earlier, also with a degree in Engineering. Life was hard for them as they could not get any permanent job because of their disability, recalled the son, Tang Zi Sheng who is now awaiting to receive his scroll in Mechatronic Engineering from the Tunku Abdul Rahman University College. Tang attributes his success to two factors-his parents’ unwavering support and encouragement, and to a benefactor who has been giving him financial and psychological support from his days in primary school all the way to university. “I am eternally grateful to Eco World  for believing in me and giving me so much support and encouragement all these years,” he said. Eco World  had financed, supported, encouraged, and followed his progress right from Primary School all the way to University.  And they have not stopped caring for his welfare. Tang remembers that, as he progressed in school, he could not afford extra tuition, uniforms, school bags, tuition fees and other essentials had it not been for EWF whose staff he described as ‘exceptional’ in terms of their commitment and abiding concern. He does not know when he will receive his scroll because the Convocation date will only be fixed when Covid-19 restrictions are relaxed. Meanwhile, Tang has already found a job, as an Electrical Engineer with a local engineering company. Tang’s connection with EWF did not end with his acquisition of his degree.  Tang is a regular motivational speaker at meetings that the Foundation organizes for their other sponsored children throughout the length and breadth of the country. “Just as how EWF has helped me, I too would like to give back to society which is one of my major roles in life, he added

ECO WORLD FOUNDATION COVID-19 SPECIAL AID FOR NEEDY FAMILIES

Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, Eco World Foundation has not diminished its concern for students under its Students Aid Programme (SAP).   In fact, it has increased its contribution by introducing a new programme called “Covid-19 Special Aid for Needy Families”. Over 375 families have benefitted, along with ten shelter homes for orphans and disabled persons.   By this aid, it is hoped that parents will continue to prioritise their children’s education despite their financial constraints due to the pandemic which has already resulted in a reduction in their incomes.   The monthly incomes of these families are less than RM2,500, with the majority earning between RM1,500 and RM2,000. A few even earn only RM1,000 a month. For them, it is a struggle to meet payments for rent and utilities. Some can only afford fish or meat in their diet once a month.   Most of the children are from single parent families. Others are from families of disabled parents, the sick, hawkers, odd-job labourers, bus drivers, security guards, cleaners, babysitters, lorry and taxi drivers, and technicians. These families are from Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor, Penang and Sabah. The Foundation will provide this vulnerable group with the means to get their daily necessities.   A sum of RM125,000 has been set aside to provide them with vouchers which they can redeem to buy food and daily necessities from 99 Speed Mart. The 99 Speed Mart chain also supplement this programme with another RM8,750.   At a simple ceremony at the Foundation’s premises in Setia Alam, Chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the Foundation is committed to its stated objective of offering a helping hand to those who are needy, irrespective of race, colour, creed or locality.   Tan Sri Lee hoped that this assistance will encourage the parents to continue keeping their children in school.

BAREFOOT TEACHERS AT ORANG ASLI VILLAGE WALKING THE EXTRA MILE

Barefoot teachers at an Orang Asli preschool in a village near Gua Musang have been walking the extra mile for the children under their care.  They have spared no effort in ensuring the children under their care have  the best school facilities and the best education that their meagre surroundings  are able to offer. One such educationist is Ros binti Apa, a preschool teacher who has been sparing no effort to relentlessly provide the best for the children under her charge.  When the school was closed during the Movement Control Order, she would prepare worksheets that  parents would come to school to collect for their  children at  home.  The school has no gadgets or Internet to offer the children online education. Besides providing for the children, Ros also has regular meetings with the parents to inquire about her keep while at home.  Said Rossa’s mother, Amek Sulie:“I am very happy there is a pre-school in our village. Even during MCO. I ensured  that my daughter finished all her homework”.  During normal school days, Rossa, and her classmates walk to school and back home everyday. Rossa does some colouring, watched by her Mum and an Assistant teacher             At another Kelas Komuniti Kampong in Sungai Poh, Gopeng, Perak, the teachers there talk with pride about the achievements of their star pupil called Muskymi who scored 91 per cent in his year-end assessment and is now in primary one at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampong Poh. However, not all Orang Asli children are doing well in school, primarily due to a lack of solid foundation in early childhood education.  Other reasons are the lack of  resources,  facilities and finance. According to a study conducted by the Centre of Orang Asli Concerns (COAC), out of 100 children who enter primary school, only six would complete their Form Five.  In an attempt to redress this yawning gap between urban and rural areas, especially for the Orang Asli, an organization called Persatuan Suara Kanak-Kanak Malaysia (SUKA) has stepped in to help. SUKA launched a programme called Empower  to Teach(E2T).  The project provides training, support and resources for Orang Asli communities in remote areas to start their own pre-school education classes within their villages.  Since the launch of E2T, the Eco World Foundation (EWF) has partnered with SUKA and provided RM325,000 in moral, physical support and refundable financial support. Added Tan Sri Lee:“Helping the Orang Asli was always something we wanted to do,  especially in terms of education. So when we were approached by SUKA we were happy to support this meaningful programme.”  So far, EWF has sponsored 10 preschools within the Orang Asli community by paying the allowance for teachers and assistant teachers, and meeting the cost for teacher training,  books and other school necessities.   Barefoot teachers underwent training during school holidays for continuous improvement

SAVE MOTHER EARTH BY PLANTING MANGROVE SEEDLINGS

Mangrove forests were once generally dismissed as swampy wastelands. Planners, scientists, and coastal dwellers have now come to value them as the remarkably diverse and important ecosystems they are. Mangroves, seagrass beds, and coral reefs work as a single system that keeps coastal zones healthy. Mangroves provide essential habitat for thousands of species. They also stabilise shorelines, preventing erosion and protecting the land — and the people who live there — from waves and storms. In efforts to preserve Mother Earth, a group of 28 volunteers from Eco World Development Group Berhad participated in planting mangrove seedlings at Kuala Selangor Nature Park (KSNP), Kuala Selangor. The programme began with a talk on the importance of mangrove protection followed by a tour and mangrove seedling planting. The volunteers were very excited and enjoyed themselves while doing their bit to help Mother Earth.

The EcoWorld Foundation has extended its scope to become a friend of the Befrienders of Kuala Lumpur. It has responded to its request to provide its premises with much-needed make-over to create a more conducive environment for the staff, the volunteers and visitors. The Foundation has spent RM50,000 to refurbish its Befrienders KL at 95 Jalan Templer, Petaling Jaya by upgrading the furniture, giving it a fresh coat of paint and refreshing its interior design.  The interior design of the centre’s five rooms was meticulously planned with the objective of creating conducive spaces for the intense conversations that take place there. “With the mounting stress in the workplace, compounded by financial difficulties and family pressures, depression and anxiety are increasingly prevalent in Malaysian society. ECOWORLD STAFF HELP RIVER RESTORATION WORK AT FEDERAL HILL, KUALA LUMPUR

A group of 22 volunteers from the EcoWorld Development Group participated in  the river  restoration effort of the  Global Environment Centre (GEC) at the 18-acre Malaysian Nature Society Urban Community Forest at Federal Hill in July this year..  With its prime location opposite the K.L. Sentral Commercial District, the forest is at risk of being displaced by urban development. River restoration is the re-establishment of natural physical processes (e.g. variation of flow and sediment movement), of features (e.g. sediment sizes and river shape) and of physical habitats of a river system (including submerged, bank and floodplain areas). The purpose of the activities was to restore the appearance of the river as an open classroom for the education centre; to enhance the sense of ownership of the river by the public; and to reduce river pollution. This is not the first time that the Foundation has worked with GEC on the stream restoration.  The Foundation has supported this effort in June 2018. In the process, the staff learned from GEC how to make soap and candles using used cooking oil.. They also learned how to carry out water monitoring with water test kits.

ECOWORLD TEAMS UP WITH SUKA SOCIETY FOR ORANG ASLI EDUCATION EMPOWERMENT INITIATIVE

The Eco World Foundation is proud to be supporting the Persatuan Kebajikan Suara Kanak-Kanak Malaysia (“SUKA Society”) in its Empowered2Teach project for 2018.  The collaboration was made possible through the Social Impact Exchange initiatives of Agensi Inovasi Malaysia. The Foundation places strong emphasis on education as it is the means for eradicating poverty and for the economic enhancement of a community. The Empowered2Teach project aims to provide greater access to pre-school education for Orang Asli children. Since its launch in 2010, the programme has helped many indigenous children in remote villages to gain access to pre-school education which prepares them for primary school. The inability to read and write has put indigenous children at a severe disadvantage and has long been an obstacle in the pursuit of quality education for the Orang Asli community. Through Empower2Teach, Orang Asli teachers are given the tools, resources and encouragement to become leaders for education in their communities. Consistent guidance, monitoring and support are provided to the teachers and community to ensure the pre-school children receive quality education and care. This year, the project saw the introduction of report templates to monitor student attendance, lesson plan progress, teachers’ learning & development as well as feedback from parents and the community. These efforts are intended to instil a deeper sense of community responsibility in making education a priority. Eco World Foundation is contributing a sum of RM200,000 towards the administration of the Empowered2Teach programme  in 10 remote Orang Asli villages in Peninsula Malaysia this year.

Since its inception, the Eco World Foundation has been placing its priority on education. In line with this aspiration, it recently sponsored the supply of 30,000 copies of The Star’s education pullout Step Up at a cost of RM30,000 to 60 schools in the Klang Valley for the period June to November.     The Star’s  Step Up programme seeks to improve the English proficiency of primary school students. STREAM RESTORATION AT FEDERAL HILL, KUALA LUMPUR (30/6/18)

A group of 32 volunteers from EcoWorld joined the stream restoration effort by Global Environment Centre (GEC) to restore the stream at Malaysian Nature Society Urban Community Forest at Federal Hill on 30 June.  MNS Urban Community Forest located at Bukit Persekutuan, which is covered by an 18-acre secondary forest is one of the last sizeable green lungs in Kuala Lumpur.  With its prime location opposite the K.L. Sentral Commercial District, it is at great risk of being displaced by urban development. River restoration is the re-establishment of natural physical processes (e.g. variation of  flow and sediment movement), features (e.g. sediment sizes and river shape) and physical habitats of a river system (including submerged, bank and floodplain areas). It was a very tough job as it required lots of effort to bring the heavy sand bags down to the river manually and to widen the river and clearing the debris despite the wet and soggy condition.

ECOWORLD PENANG HELPS PULAU AMAN RESIDENTS SET UP FLOOD RELIEF CENTRE

Team EcoWorld in Penang recently went to the aid of Pulau Aman villagers who face hardships due to flooding. It contributed necessities worth approximately RM10,000 for the setting up of a flood relief centre in the village at the request of the JKKK Pulau Aman.   The relief centre will be located in the community hall situated in the centre of Pulau Aman.  The hall is a convenient location to serve the villagers as an evacuation centre and for the distribution of relief supplies. This hall can accommodate about 40 affected people at a time. It is just a walking distance away from the jetty which is a critical transportation and communication point especially during emergencies.  The hall can also serve as a command centre. In early November last year, Penang was stuck by the worst flash floods in history when it rained non-stop for about 15 hours. On 5 November, 80% of Penang was partially submerged in water and approximately 1,600 evacuees were placed in several flood relief centers around the island. Pulau Aman, a village close to EcoWorld’s development of Eco Horizon in Batu Kawan was not spared. The team visited the villagers on 6 November together with Eco World Foundation Chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye to see how they could assist in the relief effort. A total of 50 members of Team EcoWorld volunteers rolled up their sleeves and began ‘gotong-royong’ activities such as chopping up fallen trees and clearing the rubbish and clutter in the surrounding residential area. A separate unit under the leadership of the General Manager of EcoWorld North, Mr Chan Soo How, aided the needy with supplies of  necessities such as food,  drinks, blankets, and clothes. In addition, EcoWorld also provided building materials such as zinc, wood and cement and repaired two houses which were badly destroyed by the strong winds. In handing over the necessities for the Flood Relief Centre on 13 Jan 2018 , Eco World Foundation Chairman Tan Sri Lee lauded the efforts of Team EcoWorld volunteers and said  that about RM53,000 was spent for the flood relief mission last November. “With today’s contribution amounting to RM10,000, EcoWorld has spent a total of RM63,000 in this flood relief mission in aid of the Pulau Aman residents thus far,” he added. “We hope our small contribution will be able to lessen the burden of Pulau Aman residents as well as the Penang state,” he said.

EcoWorld Foundation donated a total of 12 sets of desktop computers worth approximately RM30,000 to SJK(C) Sin Bin, Sg Lima, Pulau Ketam recently.  A total of 125 students from pre-school to Primary 6 will be able to enjoy the benefits of the new desktop computers.   “Computers are the basic necessities in this digital era and students are exposed to more things and can easily access information anytime and anywhere.” said EcoWorld Foundation Chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye during the handing over ceremony. SJK(C) Sin Bin, Sg Lima is located in a small island close to Pulau Ketam where accessibility is poor due to limited ferry service from the mainland. In addition, access for the residents to daily necessities is expensive and limited. To meet the costs of maintaining the school, the school board has renovated and converted the old pre-school premises into a home stay unit, capable of accommodating 25 people. Eco World Foundation’s presentation was very well received by the people of Sg Lima Island.  Tan Sri Lee called on more corporate bodies to help this school with much-needed funds.

ECO WORLD FOUNDATION SPONSORS 20,400 COPIES OF BERITA HARIAN EDUCATION PULLOUT FOR 12 SCHOOLS

Reading newspapers is one way to gain knowledge even in the new digital era. Although with the fast progress of the digital world people tend to rely on online news sources, newspapers remain the authoritative sources for news and information. Reading newspapers is also an extension of using hard copy books and reading materials in the teaching and learning environment.  It is also an affordable source for most pupils. Many newspapers have special sections on Newspapers in Education (NiE) and educational pullouts which have been useful additional educational tools in classrooms. Realizing the benefits of promoting the reading habit and keeping abreast of current national and international events , the Foundation has been sponsoring the supply of newspapers in some schools.  It recently agreed to sponsor 20,400 copies of Berita Harian’s education pullot Didik for 12 schools in Perlis, Kedah and Selangor. Each school will receive  50 copies of 34 editions of Didik until November 2018.  The sponsorship cost RM24,530.00. The Didik pullout also has tips on answering UPSR questions which are useful for teachers and students.

Launching of SAP in Serian, Sarawak

The EcoWorld Foundation has extended its aid for school children to the state of Sarawak with the adoption of three schools in Serian i.e SK Temong, SK Sejijag and SK Sungan. SAP in Serian is different from our other programmes in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah.  In Peninsular and Sabah, we are selective and assist 20-30 students per school. However, in Serian, we help every student in the three schools. The Foundation sponsors the workbooks for each subject for all students from Year 1 to Year 6.  This programme is a 3 years pilot project with annual allocation of RM40,000.00.  If the programme meets its objectives the foundation will continue to sponsor the students in the long term.

The SAP students in tertiary education were also present to share their journey to a higher learning institution.  The sharing was very inspiring, and many parents were touched by the “kisah benar” shared by the students.

The question and answer session was also well received by parents, many had asked about how to continue the assistance to secondary education, what are the assistance given etc.  By attending the DWP, parents know the SAP and their role as  parents  better.  The parents were asked to play a more active role to ensure their kids do well in studies besides imbibing in them the right values.

The DWP programme had a very good turn up rate of >90% in  the states of Perlis, Kedah, and Pahang;  and 70-89% in Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Johor.

After the first visit on 29 December 2015, Tan Sri Lee went back to Kg Sri Sentosa to carry out a site visit on the second phase of upgrading work.  The second phase of upgrading work started on 26 Jan to 3 Feb 2016.  The work involved improving the drainage system, installation of water gate, levelling work and enhance the road condition.  The villagers were very happy on the work done by Eco World.  “I am just so happy!” That was the first words uttered by 65-year-old Misnah Jani who added that for the last 15 years, there was no proper road into the kampong. “It is fantastic. My son asked me who was responsible for the upgrading of the road and I said the Eco World Foundation.  70-year-old Ahmad Aliysin said that he was happy and relieved. “Even if the water rises now, the road does not turn muddy. We live in a low-lying area and when there’s a flood it is difficult to get out of the kampong.  I’ve lost count of the number of times that I’ve fallen down,” he shared.
